The Roles of Women in Athenian Democracy
In ancient Athens, women did not have much freedom. Athenian women could not be a part of the government, vote, own land, or even buy large items. The primary responsibilities of a woman were childcare, cooking, and cleaning. Women could not be seen alone outside of the home. Women were only permitted to be outside if shopping, attending a funeral, or participating in a religious activity. And during these times, they were accompanied by a male chaperone.
